2019 SER Convention - Choo Choo City Rails

The Cherokee Division is working hard, putting together the final details for what will be a great 2019 SER Convention in Chattanooga, TN.

The Choo Choo City Rails SER Convention will be held May 30- June 2, 2019. Chattanooga is rich in railroad history. From the Great Locomotive Chase of the Civil War to Glenn Miller’s "Chattanooga Choo Choo," railroads have played an important part in its development.

Great clinics are planned with Pelle Søeborg (banquet speaker), Cody Grivno, Matt Herman, Lance Mindheim, Shane Wilson of ScaleTrains.com, and many others.

Several of Chattanooga’s major industries, many that are rail served will be available as part of the Prototype/Industrial Tours. Tours include ADM’s trans-load facility, Buzzi Unicem  (Signal Mt Cement)Komatsu, Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum Steam Excursion, and JIT Steel Services.

And we have an exciting line up of home layout tours and operating sessions to choose from. 

Thursday, prior to the convention, ScaleTrains.com is sponsoring a trip on the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum's Hiwassee River Rail Excursion. and a catered BBQ lunch at their Benton, TN headquarters.  Pelle, Cody, Matt, Lance and the ScaleTrains.com crew will be on-board for a great train ride.  Tickets for this event are sold out. 

On Sunday, following the convention, join ScaleTrains.com in Dalton, GA at the NS/CSX diamond next to the freight station to watch mainline action as trains head to and from Atlanta through downtown Dalton.

There are world famous attractions such as Rock City, Ruby Falls and the Incline Railway. Ride the trains at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum or view the sights atop Lookout Mountain; the Tennessee Aquarium; ride the Southern Belle Riverboat. Bring the family, come early, stay late and enjoy all that Scenic City has to offer.

  • Thursday May 30, registration is from 5 PM until 9 PM, operating session.

  • Saturday June 1, Clinics, home layout tours, Contest Room, Consignment Sale, and banquet.
  • Sunday, June 2, Home Layout tours, operating sessions, and railfanning at the NS/CSX diamond in Dalton, GA.

Convention Location

The SER Convention Headquarters will be the DoubleTree Hotel Downtown Chattanooga.  The hotel will be the center of activity for the convention.  All clinics and the banquet on Saturday evening will be held at the hotel.  The Industrial Tours will depart by bus Friday morning and Friday afternoon from the side entrance of the hotel.  Convention attendees will pick up their convention packets containing name tags, banquet meal ticket, and  pre-ordered convention shirts at the SER Registration Table at the hotel.

The DoubleTree offers upscale amenities, decor, and spacious meeting rooms and is centrally located and within walking distance of attractions including the Aquarium, Children's Creative Discovery Museam, and a one block walk to the FREE downtown shuttle.  The surrounding area is loaded with excellent dining choices. 

Hotel reservations must be made separately from the convention registration.

To view a map of the downtown Chattanooga area showing the location of the DoubleTree Hotel please click Map of the downtown Chattanooga area.  Note that parking at the DoubleTree Hotel is only for guests staying at the hotel.  If you are driving in from other hotels around the city there are three parking garages within a two block radius of the hotel.  On the map they are marked with the letter "P."  One is directly behind the hotel.  Parking is around $8.00 per day.  You can also see the hotels location to attractions and some of the restaurants located around our convention site.

Online Registration

Click on Online Registration above. Make sure that all required fields are filled out. If you change your mind and do not want to enter any information go to the bottom of the form and click on Reset.

Once you have entered all of the information click on Submit. This will bring up a second page where you can confirm your entries. Once Confirmed you will be taken to PayPal to select your Payment method. You can pay by PayPal or by Credit/Debit card through the PayPal website. Note you can use your browser back arrow to return to this page.

If you do not want to register online you can register at the convention.  There is not enough time left for us to guarantee we receive your application sent through the mail before the convention starts. Cash or checks only.

If you are wanting to sell items in the Consignment Room and would like to have the forms in advance of the convention please contact Brendan Brosnan and he will e-mail the information to you.  Brendan's e-mail isb.brosnan@epbfi.com.  His phone number is 423-602-5259.  The Consignment Room is large (1,245 sq. ft.) so we should have plenty of room for items you want to sell as well as pick up a few bargains.

Prototype / Industrial Tours

Several of Chattanooga’s major industries, many that are rail served will be available as part of the Prototype/Industrial Tours. Tours include ADM’s trans-load facility, Buzzi Unicem  (Signal Mt Cement), Komatsu, and Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum Steam Excursion.

The industry tours will be accessed by chartered bus only, individual vehicles will not be allowed on industry property.  The industry tours are not handicapped accessible.

Industrial Tours occur on Friday only.

Non-Rail Activities

Unfortunately only 1 person signed up for the organized Non-Rail scheduled events and we had to release the reserved space at the restaurants and tour guide.
