2020 SER Board of Director Election - Slate of Candidates

Nominating Committee chair Peter  Youngblood, MMR, is pleased to announce the slate of candidates for the 2020 SER Board of Directors election.

Voting information.

VICE PRESIDENT

William Michael Barry, MAOM

My name is William M. Barry (Mike), my wife makes our home in Pascagoula, MS. I retired from the Pascagoula Police Dept and the U S Navy Reserve (R) after 20 years of service.

I started in the Hobby around 1975. In the late 1970’s Jim Blanchard and I petitioned the NMRA to change and create the Magnolia Division. Adding the Southern half of Mississippi to the SER. I served several years as Superintendent. I let my membership expire but continued as a volunteer Superintendent. I’ve coordinated and developed numerous train shows and meets here on the Gulf coast.

I will become the VP at the Mississippi Coast Model Railroad Museum in 2020. We have leaders for Pine Burr Council earlier this year. The Museum will use the N-Scale layout when it is completed, to assist the scouts work toward their Railroading merit badge.

Again, each Division should have a dedicated youth coordinator. High schoolers would be the easiest group to work with, that is 13 years of Juvenile Justice experience speaking. I talked about an N-Scale layout earlier. We are trying to replicate the Mobile Division CSX (L & N) which covers the area from Mobile, AL to New Orleans, LA. We hope to have it up and operational November 2020.

Last and surely not least, I’m asking for your vote and support for the position of SER Vice President.

SECRETARY

Michael Cummings

My name is Mike Cummings and I am running for a second term as Secretary on the SER Board for 2020.   I have had the privilege of serving the region in this capacity for the last two years and have enjoyed the experience immensely.  Prior to the last two years, my activities in the NMRA were limited to the Piedmont Division and served a two year term as Director of Personnel, and a year as a member of the Marketing Committee.

In addition to the above experience, I have been appointed to a position as Assistant Secretary to the National NMRA Board, assisting the Secretary where needed.   I have personally benefited from expanding my involvement within the NMRA, and hope to maintain my efforts to assist the Regional and National Leadership whenever needed.

I model the Erie Lackawanna Railroad in 1970 and am particularly focused on steel mill modeling.

Married and together with my wife Robyn for forty years this summer, with three adult sons.  We live in Alpharetta, Georgia.

I would appreciate your consideration during the upcoming 2020 SER Elections.

DIRECTOR

Ken Mattern

I have been a member of the NMRA for over ten years and have been an active member of the Mid-South Division of the SER since it was re-activated. I’m the division webmaster and am on the BOD. I have worked as a software developer for the Department of Defense until my retirement in 2017. I’ve been active in the SER and NMRA and have attended five national conventions as well as numerous SER meetings. Before moving south I was a minister in the church and owned and operated an electronics manufacturing business. I am currently serving on the SER BOD  as a director by appointment and wish to serve as an elected official. I believe that my past experience will serve the SER and model railroading community well.

DIRECTOR

Randall Watson

My name is Randall Watson, I’m running for the position of Director of the Southeastern Region (SER) Board.  I’m acquainted with a lot of the region membership however, for those of you I have not had the pleasure of meeting, I’d like to share some information about myself.  I joined the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) as a regular member in 1970 becoming a Life Member of the NMRA in 1994.  Briefly, I have served in my home division in the positions of Treasurer, Director and various committees such as the division annual train show for 15 years. I volunteered for the Cross Roads Atlanta National Convention as a layout tour guide and as a member of the host committee for the Peachtree Express National convention. I was Chairman of the ticket sales booth and worked in the sales booth the entire convention.

Under the region leadership of President Roy Tritt, I served as Assistant Treasurer for two years before being elected to fill the position of Treasurer for two years also under President Tritt and an additional two years under President Bob Beaty. After completing my role as treasurer, I ran for and was elected to fill a four year term in the position of Region Director.  Under President Beaty’s  leadership, I was also appointed region car sales chairman in addition to my director position.  I have served in the position of Region Assistant AP Manager under George Gilbert.  When George left the AP Manager position, I was appointed by President Alan Mole to fill the Region AP Manager position in which I still serve in addition to chairing the on-going region car sales project.

My personal accomplishments include receiving the SER Region Dave Muller Award in 2001 for division volunteerism. In 2018, I was honored and humbled to be presented the Vern Yarbrough Award for outstanding service in the Southeastern Region as this region has many other qualified recipients other than myself.

Although it’s been years since I’ve served in a voting position of the SER Board, I feel my knowledge, experience and involvement at both the division and region level will be an asset in reaching out to fellow modelers, both members and non-members, to encourage participation and insure the continuation of a strong region. I feel the position of Director has two major responsibilities, the first being to our great region. The second responsibility is to the members of the region.  As your Director, I have the responsibility to bring all suggestions or concerns to the attention of the board for their consideration.  I appreciate your consideration and support by voting for me to continue my service to the region by filling one of the two open director positions.

My appreciation and thanks to all current board members for their hard work and dedication to the SER.
